Exchange of Experts (EoE) and 15th International Congress on Fire Safety & Science (FSS)

Jun 8, 2023

On the 5th and 6th June 2023, our own FRISSBE senior researchers Dr Andrea Lucherini and Dr Ulises Rojas-Alva attended an Exchange of Experts (EoE) organised by the Netherlands Institute for Public Safety (NIPV). The goal of the workshop was to gather civil protection experts and research Institutes from EU members and neighbouring countries to share experiences, gain valuable knowledge and strengthen operational skills. The programme is funded by the European Commission and was established to complement EU training and exercises in the field of civil protection.

There were many interesting discussions on topics related to mass timber buildings, lithium-ion batteries fires, wildland fires, sustainable construction materials, safe green transition for firefighters, and firefighting during wartime in Ukraine. Andrea presented his work on “Fire safety aspects of timber structures and tall timber buildings”, and Ulises gave a talk entitled “Is Slovenia prepared for emerging fire hazards due to Lithium-ion battery technology?”, which is carried out in collaboration with the Gasilska brigada Ljubljana - Ljubljana Fire Brigade.

On the two following days, 7th and 8th June 2023, Andrea and Ulises also attended the 15th International Congress on Fire Safety & Science (FSS), also held at the NIPV facilities in Arnhem, the Netherlands. The congress was organised by the Netherlands Institute for Public Safety (NIPV) and the Foundation Fellow FSE. Over the two days, the congress was composed of plenary lectures and break out sessions and it gathered about 200 experts to discuss the latest developments, results and insights of recent research in the field of fire safety engineering and innovative fire fighting. This year’s focus was on the relationship between sustainable building, energy transition and fire safety.
