Aleš Jug at the 10th IMFSE Fire Safety Engineering Day

Apr 4, 2025

On April 3, 2025, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in Barcelona hosted the 10th edition of the IMFSE Fire Safety Engineering Day, under the theme “Bridging the Gap Between Science and Regulations in Fire Safety Engineering.” The event brought together around 50 IMFSE students, faculty from the programme’s partner universities, and professionals from leading fire safety organizations and companies.

Dr Aleš Jug was among the invited speakers. In his presentation titled “The Importance of Evidence-Based Regulations,” Jug emphasized how science and experimental data must be at the heart of regulatory frameworks. Drawing on insights from FRISSBE’s ongoing work, he discussed the value of grounding policies in reliable research to ensure safety without compromising innovation in the built environment.

The seminar featured contributions from experts across Europe, including Dr Simon Santamaria (Hydrock/Stantec), Dr Ana Sauca and Juan Carlos López Santiago (DBI), Santos Bendicho (SODECA), and Dr Pascale Vacca (UPC), who tackled a range of topics from battery energy storage risks to wildfire urban interface (WUI) regulations.

The event concluded with a panel discussion moderated by Dr Alba Àgueda, where Jug joined other speakers to debate how to align scientific progress with evolving safety standards.

We were also pleased to see several former FRISSBE interns in attendance — Rauan Adikey, Liliana Martinez, El Ghalia Serghini, Sameed Khan, and Akash Jyothivas — who are now nearing graduation from the IMFSE programme. Their presence was a strong reminder of the growing links between FRISSBE and the international fire safety community.
