FRISSBE Contributes to Advancing Timber Reuse

May 22, 2025

From 20th to 22nd May, Dr Andrea Lucherini and Dr Tomaž Pazlar represented ZAG in Trondheim, Norway, engaging in key collaborative meetings and project activities focused on timber reuse and fire safety.

The visit began at RISE Fire Research on 20th May. Both RISE FR and FRISSBE teams presented their institutions and current research, followed by in-depth discussions on possible collaboration — particularly in the area of fire safety for mass timber construction. RISE FR, a joint venture of RISE Sweden and SINTEF, is a leading centre in fire research and testing.

On 21st and 22nd May, Dr Lucherini and Dr Pazlar attended the General Assembly of the ForestValue2 project TiReX (Framework for smart condition reassessment of Reclaimed Timber to eXtend the service life of long-lived wood products using non-destructive testing and automated data postprocessing), led by SINTEF. The sessions covered updates from all work packages, including those led by ZAG. Dr Lucherini is ZAG’s lead for TiReX, which focuses on understanding the fire behaviour of reclaimed structural timber.

The agenda also included a technical visit to the TiReX pilot building, where non-destructive tests on reclaimed timber elements were performed. The data from this demonstration will contribute to developing a framework for reclaimed timber grading and promote circular construction practices.

FRISSBE’s participation underlines its ongoing commitment to sustainable and fire-safe building solutions through European collaboration.
