Importance of terminology

Nov 8, 2023

Terminology is very important as a way to ensure that people can effectively communicate with each other with few misunderstandings. This is especially important in professional and scientific settings where complex and sometimes even abstract phenomena are discussed thus being on the same terms as the person you are communicating with can be of even higher importance.

When applying for funding from the Slovenian Research And Innovation Agency (ARIS) some parts of the proposals need to be prepared in the Slovene language. While applying for funding in collaboration with the Department of Materials Chemistry from the National Institute of Chemistry for the purchase of a new piece of equipment for battery testing, we had to come up with a Slovenian equivalent for the term thermal abuse testing.

Later we learned about Terminologišče, a portal of the Terminological Section of the Fran Ramovš Institute of the Slovenian Language ZRC SAZU. The main task of the Terminological Section is the collection and harmonisation of Slovenian terminology of various subject fields, which includes terminological theory research and, in particular, the compilation of terminological dictionaries and terminological counselling. On the Termonologišče portal, they also answer questions submitted to them by the public so we ran our little terminological conundrum with them and received a professional answer that is now also available for anyone here.
We presented our dilemma and they gladly answered. You can see their answer also published publicly here.
