On 25 July 2023, our interns Farith Hinojosa Coca, Maria Binte Mannan, Matheus Pontes Lima, and Ashwant Singh from the International Masters of Science in Fire Safety Engineering (IMFSE) and Simon Bodin from Polytech Angers got a valuable opportunity to visit the R&D facilities of Knauf Insulation (KI) in Škofja Loka, Slovenia. This was a part of the 1st summer internship program on ventilated façades run by FRISSBE, ZAG, and KI, the interns were accompanied by Dr. Amaya Osacar, KI’s Fire Safety Manager.

The visit proved to be immensely beneficial for the interns as they gained insightful knowledge about the complex processes involved in the manufacturing process of KI products. Throughout the full-day visit, the interns explored various departments, starting with the acoustic laboratory to understand the significance of sound absorption, sound insulation, and how these concepts influence the decision-making about insulation products. Moreover, the interns delved into the materials laboratory to learn about KI's materials, products, and testing processes. Witnessing such rigorous testing and development processes related to the quality and performance of the product, left a strong impression on the interns.

One of the highlights of the visit was the newly constructed fire laboratory. This facility is being progressively equipped under high standards to provide KI with the possibility to run in-house testing and research that will serve to keep their products at the forefront with respect to fire safety. KI’s compromise and strive for keeping their products at a high level with respect to different dimensions was clear to the interns.

In addition to the facilities visit, the interns and Dr. Osacar had the opportunity to bond over a delightful lunch and get to know part of the amazing staff running the facilities and all the cutting-edge processes taking place there. Overall, the visit to KI provided the summer interns with a unique and hands-on experience with the products, granting them a deeper understanding of the product’s manufacturing process and the company's dedication to quality and innovation.
