On August 20th, FRISSBE researchers from ZAG Prof Grunde Jomaas, Dr Andrea Lucherini and Dr Vadim Kudryashov together with a group of IMFSE interns, Hishe K. Negash, Jawad B. Mustafvi, Clareta J. Suwarna and Hibatallah Labhiri visited the ROCKWOOL Adriatic factory in Potpićan, Croatia.
The group was warmly welcomed by Anđelka Toto Ormuž, Corporate Affairs Manager at ROCKWOOL Adriatic, and Božo Matijević, Technical Advisor at ROCKWOOL Adriatic. They introduced the company and gave an overview of the Adriatic facility. Their presentation highlighted ROCKWOOL strong commitment to sustainability, operating as a nearly zero-waste company with products that are fully recyclable. They also explained the role of stone wool beyond energy efficiency, showing how it contributes to acoustics, water management, moisture control, circularity, and aesthetics. They showed us how stone wool are being used in areas such as food production and water management in playgrounds. Following this, ERA Chair holder, Prof Grunde Jomaas, presented the FRISSBE project and shared insights on challenges related to fire safety. This led to a broader discussion about gaps in fire safety legislation and ideas for improving awareness and building safety standards.
After the meeting, Anđelka guided the visitors through the factory’s production lines and explained step by step how stone wool insulation is produced, a key material for improving the energy efficiency of buildings. That is followed by the laboratory tour, where stone wool is tested for performance and durability. It was very interesting to see how such a large-scale, highly automated production system runs 24/7, which highlights how ROCKWOOL is using modern technologies to improve efficiency. To conclude the day, traditional lunch in a Croatian mountain village was served, rounding off an experience that combined technical learning with cultural exchange. The excursion was a valuable learning opportunity for the FRISSBE colleagues and IMFSE interns. It also strengthened the collaboration between ZAG and ROCKWOOL, paving the way for future cooperation and knowledge sharing. Thanks to ROCKWOOL Adriatic for their warm hospitality and engaging tour.
