Montenegrin Delegation Visits ZAG Fire Laboratory

Jun 9, 2026

On 9th June, the ZAG Fire Laboratory in Logatec hosted a delegation from the Ministry of Interior of Montenegro, as part of the country's ongoing process of aligning its national legislation with European Union standards ahead of accession. The visit focused specifically on fire safety legislation and practice in Slovenia, providing the Montenegrin delegation with a first-hand overview of the regulatory framework, technical standards, and testing infrastructure that underpin fire safety in the Slovenian built environment.

The programme was opened by Dr Aleš Jug, Head of the Department for Fire-Safe Sustainable Built Environment at ZAG, who welcomed the delegation and set the context for the day's sessions.

The morning consisted of a series of presentations delivered by representatives from key Slovenian institutions. The first session addressed the practical application of fire safety technical guidelines for buildings, presented by a representative of the Slovenian Fire Protection Association. This was followed by an overview of the Fire Protection Act and the system of fire safety inspection and supervision in Slovenia, delivered by the Head of the Inspection Supervision Sector at the Inspectorate of the Republic of Slovenia for Protection against Natural and Other Disasters. A further presentation covered the Building Act and the broader spatial planning and construction system in Slovenia, given by the Head of the Spatial Planning and Construction System Sector at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning.

After a short break, Dr Urša Blumauer, Head of the Fire Laboratory and Fire Engineering Unit at ZAG, presented the capabilities and activities of the ZAG Fire Laboratory. This was followed by a guided tour of the laboratory facilities, during which the delegation witnessed a live fire test demonstration on a photovoltaic system, a topic of growing relevance across Europe as solar installations become increasingly common on buildings, and received an overview of the laboratory's research and testing infrastructure.

The visit concluded with an open discussion and questions session, creating space for dialogue on potential areas of future cooperation between Slovenian and Montenegrin institutions in the field of fire safety.

The event is a reflection of the broader role that ZAG and its partners play in supporting the development of robust fire safety frameworks, not only within Slovenia but also in neighbouring countries working towards European integration.
