From 25th to 27th June 2025, Prof Grunde Jomaas, ERA Chair of the FRISSBE project at ZAG, participated as a keynote speaker in the International Fire Safety Symposium (IFireSS2025) hosted by FireSERT at Ulster University, Belfast.
The conference brought together over 160 participants from 37 countries, including leaders in fire safety science, engineering, policy, and industry. Prof Jomaas delivered a keynote lecture entitled Burning and Learning – Ensuring a Fire-safe Sustainable Built Environment through Research, highlighting the critical role of scientific knowledge in addressing fire safety challenges within the green transition.
The symposium was also a celebration of FireSERT’s 35th anniversary, and featured tributes to the late Professor James Quintiere, a pioneer in fire safety science. The gala dinner and conference programme fostered both technical exchange and community reflection.
Organised by Prof Ali Nadjai and his team at Ulster University, IFireSS2025 was praised for its professionalism and collaborative atmosphere. Prof Jomaas extended his thanks to the organisers and commended the event for its smooth delivery and engaging discussions.
