This guideline offers actionable insights and recommendations derived from robust scientific experiments and reliable statistics. By providing clear guidance on effective safety measures, we aim to empower stakeholders to minimize fire risks associated with PV systems.
As part of the REPowerEU plan, the EU Commission has defined an ambitious strategy for making the installation of rooftop solar energy compulsory for all buildings. This is now being implemented via the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) requiring solar energy installations on most buildings in the future.
Member States shall ensure the deployment of suitable solar energy installations as follows:
Initial findings indicate that risk related to the installation of PV panels is not only associated with increased fire load and the possibility of ignition, but also with how a fire develops on a roof. This change in fire behavior will, if not addressed accordingly, increase the extent and speed of fire spread and thus also the intensity and consequences of fires.
