ROCKWOOL Italy Webinar on PV fire safety

Apr 9, 2025

On April 9, FRISSBE Senior Researcher Dr Andrea Lucherini participated as a guest speaker in a webinar organized by ROCKWOOL Italy, titled “Coperture piane: come progettare in sicurezza con il fotovoltaico” (Flat Roofs: How to Design Safely with Photovoltaics).

The event gathered over 550 attendees and focused on key fire safety concerns associated with the integration of photovoltaic (PV) systems on flat roofs. The session lasted approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes, followed by 20 minutes of audience Q&A.

Dr Lucherini contributed with his expertise on fire dynamics and fire safety engineering, offering technical insights and real-case examples of PV-related fire incidents. He also discussed current and future regulatory frameworks and emphasized the importance of evidence-based fire safety design.

Alongside Dr Lucherini, the webinar featured speakers from ROCKWOOL Italy:

Together, the panel addressed:

-Fire risks associated with the installation of the PV panles:

  • Identification of risks, general issues, fire propagation with photovoltaic systems and,
  • Examples of real fires.

-Evolution of photovoltaic panel installations in the Italian market:

  • Analysis of current and future trends;
  • Review of current regulations and their possible evolution and,
  • Identification of the essezionali requirements in the design of flat roofs.

-Guide to fire safety for photovoltaic systems installed on flat roofs

  • Strategies to ensure fire safety of roofs with photovoltaic system application and,
  • Dealing with risks materials, configuration, fire safety operation and general issues.

-ROCKWOOL solutions:

  • Insights into materials and systems for safe and efficient design and,
  • Importance of ensuring investments that last and improve building safety.

The webinar highlighted the relevance of cross-sector collaboration in developing long-lasting, fire-safe buildings in an era of rapid renewable energy expansion.
