Strengthening Energy Resilience in Defence with FRISSBE’s Contribution

The INDY project, focused on enhancing energy independence and resilience in deployable military camps, officially concluded on 31 January 2025. As one of the first strategic initiatives under the European Defence Fund (EDF), INDY aimed to reduce the environmental footprint of military operations while strengthening operational capabilities. The final dissemination event took place in Brussels on 22 January 2025, where key stakeholders and experts shared insights on the project's achievements and future implications.

FRISSBE, represented by Dr Ulises Rojas-Alva, contributed to the project by providing expertise in fire safety, a critical aspect when integrating innovative energy solutions into military infrastructures. His involvement ensured that fire hazards related to emerging technologies, such as energy storage systems, were considered in the planning and evaluation of deployable camps. The project identified 13 Key Energy Capabilities (KEC), developed four military camp scenarios for different climates and operational needs, and created a database of over 65 emerging technologies aimed at improving energy efficiency.

The INDY project results highlight the importance of balancing sustainability with operational security in the defence sector. By achieving measurable improvements in energy autonomy, logistics demand reduction, and cost efficiency, the project sets a precedent for future initiatives addressing energy resilience in military operations. The knowledge gained through this collaboration will continue to inform strategic planning and innovation in the field.
