On 23rd April, the ZAG Fire Laboratory in Logatec hosted a professional seminar organised under the ZAG Training Academy, dedicated to the topic of fire safety of buildings during construction. The event brought together practitioners and professionals to address one of the most hazardous, and often overlooked, phases of a building's lifecycle.
The seminar featured presentations from several lecturers, including Aleksander Bergant and Dr Aleš Jug. Dr Jug delivered a talk entitled "Požarna tveganja med gradnjo – primer požara v Hong Kongu" ("Fire risks during construction – the example of the Hong Kong fire"), drawing on a real-world case study to illustrate the scale of consequences that poor fire safety management during construction can have on both human life and structural integrity.
A highlight of the day was a live fire test demonstration, carried out between 12:00 and 12:30, which vividly illustrated three of the most significant fire hazards present on active construction sites: the dangers of exposed combustible insulation left unprotected, the risks associated with the use of protective scaffolding nets and the speed at which they can contribute to fire spread, and the rate at which fire can escalate, with potentially severe consequences for workers and the structure alike.
The demonstration was designed not merely as a scientific exercise, but as a powerful knowledge transfer tool, making abstract risk assessments tangible and immediate for those working in the construction sector.
The seminar forms part of ZAG Training Academy's ongoing commitment to bridging the gap between fire safety research and professional practice, ensuring that the findings generated in the laboratory translate into safer construction sites across Slovenia and the wider region.
